The design book is a guide for an overall design project, that split the whole design process into different steps to make the process easier to be applied and to communicate.

This book does not only supply the instructions to develop a good design process, but it’s also an interactive instrument that allows a dialogue between the designers, the employers and the project supervisor. For this reason, at the beginning of every step there is a space where the supervisor can write some comments about expectations, confirmations and what to do to complete the step in the best way. There is also a color code guideline that explain what doesn’t work, what has to be improved, what is good for a specific step and underlines the wrong or missing information.

The Design Book concept was developed by Luwoge Consult to communicate how to build a Passive House in China.

The steps of an overall project planning are:

  1. PROJECT ORGANISATION

    The first step is understanding the needs for sustainable living with comfort and efficiency, considering physical factors health, mental factors health and materials factors health. The purpose is an higher expectation to living comfort in healthy buildings through rising prosperity and energy and environmental stress reduction. The enhancement of thermal comfort has to be managed environmentally friendly. The user has to choose a suitable certification process, through a certification label, that defines the comfort zones, the quality management and a monitoring.
    This step explains the different roles and responsibilities of certification, consulting and planning.
    There is a specific timeschedulingthat organize the work in different stages, with different contents and responsibilities.

  2. THERMAL PERFORMANCE

    The certification label standards are described in the second step, with a specific target definition. The users analyze thermal losses and gains, the building energy balance and the conservation or the recreation of hygienic comfort, on the base of certification label criteria.
    The design must consider the shading objects’ influence (during summer and winter period), the area where the building is located, the thermal envelope and the glazing area.
    The project has to optimize the building potential.

  3. BUILDING DESIGN CONCEPT

    In this step the designers explain the building concept through urban layout, site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations and views.

  4. BUILDING SERVICES CONCEPT

    The project considers all the systems (ventilation, heating, cooling, dehumidification and hot water). Designers have to show the systems through plans and sections, and they also deal the monitoring process, that includes the optimization and the evaluation of the systems use.
